Stupid rules
by MrFreeze inthere was no end to the amount of stupid rules put in place.
one that always bugged me was "no shirts with slogans when doing kh yard work or at jw gatherings.
id always get talked to about it when i'd wear shirts with a band on it or whatnot.

I saw Meatloaf about 20 years ago when I was still in and will a load of other JW's. It was a fantastic gig. Really enjoyed it. My mum, elders wife of 30 something years loves him.

assemblies and alcohol
by pedal power inour dc coming up this weekend, i hated them and the only thing that kept me going ,was the reward of booze at the end of each day.my then wife, zelous judgemental pioneer, you know the type, not only droned on about my drinking, but about everyones drinking, a real barrel of laughs not.
anyway, one year we went to another dc, in newcastle, all seemed to be going well, until lunch.we went over to a hotel for lunch,i ordered my fresh orange and food, a few minutes later, the local jw,s arrived for lunch, they had all pr-ordered drinks, alcoholic drinks, and not one drink but many !!!
they were buisy getting boozed up for the afternoon session, way to go, i was about to join them, when my wife told me " dont even think about it ", anyway she was outraged, but there they were ,with thier little convention badges, men and women, young and old, getting merry, they dont even do that here in scotland, !!!.

After the Cardiff DC we would all head down to The Captains Wife. It was always the highlight of the assembly. But I remember one year I drank way too much Newcastle Brown that I threw up all night and couldn't make it to the next days session. Funnily enough I don't recall my elder dad telling me off about it. I'm sure he did but I must have wiped it from my memory.

Do you think the British are a proud nation?
by not bitter ini think we are to a degree but i think its on a different level to the americans.
the impression i get (from watching us tv and news) is that the majority of americans come across as being proud to be american and quite a possitive nation.
whereas us brits will display pride as a nation when we have to.

I think we are to a degree but I think its on a different level to the Americans. The impression I get (from watching US TV and news) is that the majority of Americans come across as being proud to be American and quite a possitive nation. Whereas us Brits will display pride as a nation when we have to. When we are up against it or someone is having a go at us. I think we are more cynical.
The American big budget movies are a great example of this. You know the ones, where the president saves the planet or gives some speach to the nation then salutes. I know its all make believe and I actually hate these kind of movies but they do give the impression that the American people are very proud.
I sometimes think that the British and Americans are poles apart.
I'm not sure what I'm asking here. Maybe our impressions of each other. I just hope you get my drift.

Why are Pantsuits not appropriate according to The Watchtower?
by VM44 inwhy do the jws consider pansuits worm by women not appropriate attire?.
pantsuits are considered appropriate attire in the conservative business world.. secretary of state hilary clinton wears pantsuits quite often.. would pantsuits be considered appropriate for a visit to bethel?
if someone showed up at bethel wearing them, would be be asked to leave?.

Any sins you got away with?
by fade_away ini was reading a thread on here that got me thinking.. what is the purpose of confession if not another method of mind control?
back in ancient israel, confession was just this thing you did if you were a good jew.
just like observing sabbath, fasting.. you get the point.

Yes but nothing I'd admit to here because my brother is a regular poster. Besides, I'm not sure it really matters because I was on my way out. When I was really into it, I'd end up confessing to the elders and facing a JC. What a fool I was.

Does anyone know what happens to full-time JW's(DO's, CO's, Missionaries, Special pioneers, etc) when they reach old age?
by african GB Member ini am just wondering since these people never work a secular job.
is there some sort of an arrangement from the society to care for them?
presuming they don't even have children of their own to look after them when they are old..

Back in South Wales we had a sister who was a member of the remnant and ex special pioneer, when she became too frail she went to live with a retired CO and his wife. Though I'm not sure where that CO retired to or how he was funded.

Will you attend the Kingdom Hall for a funeral of parents who are still JW's? If not, do you tell them beforehand?
by ThomasCovenant ini was recently talking to an ex witness whose elderly parents, and in law parents, are still witnesses.. as shocking and incomprehensible as it may seem to both sets of parents, this ex witness believes that, just like every other human throughout human history, they are going to die.
now this ex witness has expressed to me that he won't ever step foot in a kingdom hall again.. he is in a dillemma as to what to do about their funerals.
he does not want to attend any service held at the kingdom hall as the service will be heavily controlled by the seven members of the governing body that reside in brooklyn and who don't know his parents at all.. he is quite willing to stand outside the hall, or attend the crematorium or gravesite or funeral home and also any wake that takes place afterwards as people are more free to express themselves in a less formal setting.

I'm sure this friend of yours would have no problem attending a funeral for a family member at a Catholic or C of E building even though this friend probably disagrees with those religions also.
I know that I too would feel uncomfortable attending a funeral of a close relative at the KH but I would do it for the sake of the remaining family still attending so as not to make their grief even worse. After all, it wouldn't kill me would it.
It wouldn't make bit of difference to the congregation if your friend attended or not. They probably wouldn't notice or care but the family would.
I know that I will attend both my parents funerals at the KH even though I'd despise every minute of it. But it wouldn't bother me if some of my family decided against it.
